Metropolis Empire Sofil Theater presented a few weeks ago the French movie Intouchables, which encountered an unexpected success in France. How was it considered in Lebanon? Two spectators, one French, one Lebanese, gave us their impressions after viewing the film by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache.

Claire, French journalist living in Beirut

When I went to watch this movie, I had already read a lot of positive reviews about it. All of them described the film as excellent and beautiful.
After such a praise, you can easily be disappointed when you finally get to see the film. It was my case, since I did not find the movie that fantastic.

Even though the actors are flawless and very impressive, the scenario remains rather simple-minded. I did not laugh that much, I thought the jokes were expected, with no surprises.

This film might be a social metaphor showing the old paralyzed France versus the vitality of youth of immigrant origin. But I think it lacks some subtilty and I do not know if it will help see black and disabled people differently, keeping in mind that the two heroes represent exceptions that are rarely encountered in real life.

Jinan, Lebanese journalist
“Intouchables” stresses an infinite impressive human spirit. Philip, an aristocrat paralyzed from the neck down, was looking for a personal assistant. Tired of pity, he chose Driss, a young poor black man from Paris’s suburbs, after he saw in him something different from the others who applied for the job, a difference in the spirit, and in the way dealing with details and life...

Driss took Philip out of the monotony of life he is living in his rigid wheelchair. Young and vibrant, Driss spilled off his energy onto Philip carrying him new possibilities and interests for his life, other than his luxurious hobbies like painting and opera. Driss’ life Improved materially, and Philip’s life morally.

The meeting between these two marginalized and different characters, brings a number of funny situations, but also emotional, resulting from this co-existence between two worlds apart in taste, appearance and behavior, what brings the human factor and provides a close relationship between both sides, to happily discover at the end of the film that those two personalities truly exist in real life and are living now in Morocco.

Although the film did not lack expected events and typical discourses, that did not stop it from touching viewers’ hearts by using all the good feelings’ recipes.
